Women 'ignorant' of stroke risk
Most women are ignorant of small lifestyle changes that would "dramatically reduce" the risk of strokes, the Stroke Association says. Two-thirds do not know what an optimal blood pressure reading should be. The Stroke Association is urging working-age women to have their blood pressure checked regularly and advices that an optimal reading is 120/80 mmHg.People don't realise that by making very small lifestyle changes they can dramatically reduce the risk of having a stroke

Stroke Awareness Month.
| National Stroke Awareness Month is Here! | |
| May is National Stroke Awareness Month — are you ready to start spreading awareness? We strive to provide everyone with the tools and inspiration to raise public awareness about stroke by hosting awareness events or activities. It doesn't matter if you are an individual or a large corporation, because the more people we reach, the better. We urge you to tell others about how to:

Re: My 9 year old son died from a Stroke how can this happen?
This heartbreaking account of a young child's death from stroke appeared
on the talkstroke notice board in 2006, but so far as I know, little attention has been drawn to it. I urge all talkstroke members to read the full account, it is nothing short of harrowing.
I cannot believe that the intense suffering this family has been through has so far been in vain! Matt's parents, even though they were utterly
devastated, immediately tried to raise awareness through the BBC and other agencies that stroke is a major cause of mortality in children and that around 500 children suffer a stroke in the UK every year!
So why in 2010 is very little being done to publicise this fact.
The disturbing element is that even a high percentage of doctors and medical staff are still unaware that children have strokes, so hundreds of
families have had their child's stroke misdiagnosed since 2006. A disturbing
correlation is also emerging between chickenpox and risk of stroke in children, which has also been mentioned several times on the pages of talkstroke. I support parents whose children have had major strokes and have had contact with dozens of child stroke families over the past year. In that year I would say about a third of the children had stroke as a direct result of chickenpox, usually children under 5! The majority of the rest due to AVM or a heart defect - often minor and previously undiagnosed.
In a recent debate in the House of Lords our Minister of Health led members to believe that child stroke mainly happened in neonates or children with sickle cell anaemia. I know of hundreds of children who have suffered stroke in the past 10 years and few of them fall into those categories, which is obviously why most of them were misdiagnosed and are suffering extensive disability at a young age and even in the case of Matt - unnecessary death.
A recent report from the Royal College of Physicians admitted that research and medical provision for childhood stroke was not fit for purpose and very inadequate, while adult provision is improving.
Hundreds of children are experiencing stroke every year, if they are fortunate to survive they have a lifetime ahead of them dealing with physical and mental disability. At the moment they are sent back to a mainstream school 6-9 months after stroke, often still in a wheelchair with very little support or understanding of their needs and then have to deal with competing in national exams. What future is there for them after their struggle to learn to speak again and get back on their feet? I believe all readers who have had personal or close experience of stroke will realise the extent of what is nothing short of a national scandal. Please help to ensure that these children, who year on year run into thousands are no longer 'invisible' to our government and that no more children die needlessly! Publicise the fact that kids have strokes, too.

Does depression delay or stop recovery from Stroke.
Stroke is the third death in the United States. The death of a massive brain hemorrhage, of course, can be immediatelyIf someone you love has had a stroke, you're obviously concerned about the depression may affect their recovery.Studies shows that the intensity of depression is not directly correlated with the degree of disorder patient. In fact, people who have suffered a stroke but whose mobility is reduced because of another State, does not experience the high rate of depression than those who have suffered a stroke. This has led some researchers to conclude that depression is linked to brain damage caused by stroke, instead of limited mobility.
This is important for a good reason. The risk of death is three times higher for depressed patients with stroke than non-depressed patients with stroke, regardless of their age or the type or intensity of stroke. While can be simplified, which is still under attack depressed and has lost the will to live, and this, of course, creates quick and measurable physiological changes that can deplete the immune system. Therefore, the successful treatment of depression in stroke patients is the largest importance.

Do Prayer help Stroke patients.
On JANUARY, 1997 and without warning, my life changed dramatically. A stroke seemed to move like a dragon, raced across the sky and attacked me, rendering me mute and paralzed. I was diagnosed as having a possible leaking aneurysm. My recovery plan brought me to a threshold either lean on God through prayers from family and friends .
You may think why such illness happened to me ,I have done anything wrong to anyone ever in my life then why God chosen me!
Have a very POSITVE ATTITUDE. It is a must if you want to recover fast. Just thing about your efforts and the outcome.
Always pray for yourself and others , Prayers will give you remarkable strength and show you the way to recovery.
After sitting hour after hour unable to speak properly, lift a cup of coffee, turn my head an iota without pain, I thought of pastimes I lived for. Or perhaps being a serious burden to my family.“Oh Lord,” I prayed. “I do not wish to be an invalid. I desire to recover and to fulfill the true destiny you have planned for me. Age 49 I was still young.
Daily Prayers gave me the strentgh and will power to carry on my excerises and hope to get full recovery.
NOTE: Pray through all exercises;do not give up. You Will succeed no doubt.Have in God.
The fear of a follow up stroke causes such fear that some people succumb to trying medications of all sorts; each person should listen carefully to their doctor.
Try to walk until you can do an hour each day. Do not overdo it. A walk is the best minimum exercise to ensure good blood pressure. It was appropriate for me.
Understand that when tired simply rest. Your body will tell you when. Do not fight it since it means you are healing otherwise you would simply drop dead.
Fill thoughts with positive images. Watch informative TV programs. Learn new skills. Your daily effots must have your accomplishments, not just the failures.
Stroke is a serious trauma. Stimulate your brain, and create new brain cells. SO, learn to play chess, or other thinking games. It may be painful, but keep at it.
God bless you as you draw strength from His Word. Pray for others. And do not listen to those who may weaken your desire to be healed.

Windows Live Hotmail
Windows Live Hotmail: "The expression 'God is no where' can remain unchanged; there is no need to confront or contradict that expression. The only thing necessary is to read the 'w' in 'where', in conjunction with the previous 'no', so that it becomes, 'God is now here!' The negative suddenly becomes positive! Similarly, by merely unifying your vision towards God in one direction, the distinctions and differences you see in the world disappear and the Many becomes One. Great devotees from all faiths have all realized this truth by their unwavering faith, won through the purification of the mind.

Effect of salt in diet.
Sodium intake from processed and restaurant foods contributes to increased rates of high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Decreasing sodium intake to within recommended limits could prevent thousands of deaths annuallyResearch shows a dose-dependent relationship between consuming too much salt and elevated blood pressure. When salt intake is reduced, blood pressure begins decreasing for most people within a few days to weeks. Populations who consume diets low in salt do not experience the increase in blood pressure with age that is seen in most Western countries.
We all need a small amount (e.g., between about180 mg and 500 mg per day) of sodium to keep our bodies working properly.
•The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg per day (about 1 tsp of table salt).Even if a person does not have high blood pressure they may still benefit from reducing the amount of sodium in their diet because the lower one's blood pressure in general, the lower the risk of heart disease and stroke

Singing helps stroke patients recover speech--study | The Money Times
Singing helps stroke patients recover speech-- "Music affects not only our moods but speech too. In what can be termed as a breakthrough in the treatment of stroke patients, a new study suggests that singing may help restore speech in patients.
In a study, Gottfried Schlaug, an associate professor of neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, states that stroke patients can recover speech faster by singing instead of speaking.

Fatigued or Full Throttle: Is Your Thyroid to Blame?: "How is hyperthyroidism treated?
Hyperthyroidism is easily treated. With treatment, you can lead a healthy life. Without treatment, hyperthyroidism can lead to serious heart problems, bone problems, and a dangerous condition called thyroid storm.
If your symptoms bother you, your doctor may give you pills called beta-blockers. These can help you feel better while you and your doctor decide what your treatment should be. Even if your symptoms do not bother you, you still need treatment, because hyperthyroidism can lead to more serious problems.
Radioactive iodine and anti-thyroid medicine are the treatments doctors use most often. The best treatment for you will depend on a number of things, including your age. Some people need more than one kind of treatment.
After treatment, you will need regular blood tests. These tests check to see if your hyperthyroidism has come back. They also check to see if you are making enough thyroid hormone. Sometimes treatment cures hyperthyroidism but causes the opposite problem-too little thyroid hormone. If this happens, you may need to take thyroid hormone pills for the rest of your life."

Stroke Recovery
Neuro-Scientists have long understood that the brain's primary motor cortex and the body's low-level peripheral stretch sensors encode information about the position and velocity of limb motion in a positively-correlated manner rather than a Harvard-based study about the neural learning elements responsible for motor learning may help scientists design rehabilitation protocols in which motor adaptation occurs more readily, potentially allowing for a more rapid recovery.
More broadly, untangling the algorithms the brain uses for motor learning could help improve a wide range of neural and muscular rehabilitation programs.
In stroke rehabilitation, patients who make a greater effort to use their impaired limbs can achieve better outcomes. However, there is often a vicious cycle, as a patient is far less likely to use an impaired limb if his or her other limb is fine. This pattern slows recovery and leads to greater impairment of the affected limb.
