The theory is that you can create new pathways in the brain to compensate for injured areas The key is to use your affected side as much as possible and to • Use rubber bands to exercise your fingers. For example, place your affected hand on a table and loop a rubber band around one of your fingers. With your unaffected hand, pull the rubber band up and down to exercise the affected finger.
• Squeeze a rubber ball to strengthen your affected hand.
Repeat activities several times each day.
In my experience I found, try to imitate your other hand who is the best tutor. Try to tie your shoe laces, hold the cup, hold the spoon ,eat with effected hand.
Believe me it is not easy but not impossible, have patience you your self will feel the improvement which is the prize for you. Slowly by the repeated movements not only you develop the motor skill you start feeling sensations cold and hot.

Recovery of fine motor skills after Stroke

Effect on memory in stroke patient is in same cases is short living may be 2-3 month depending on the severity of the injury.

Physical Effects of Stroke
Conditions

Spasticity
Brain injury from stroke sometimes causes muscles to involuntarily contract (shorten or flex) when you try to move your limb. This creates stiffness and tightness.
Balance
About 40 percent of survivors have serious falls within a year of their stroke.

Toe Curl
Claw toe, and a similar condition called “hammertoe,” are caused by an imbalance of muscles in the feet and toes. Brain injury during a stroke leaves survivors prone to neuromuscular imbalances.
When the Pain Never Goes Away
It’s impossible for someone who doesn't have central pain syndrome (also known as thalamic pain) to know what it's like. There's just no context to use to imagine central pain.

purnimasethi47: Stroke in children

Stroke in children

Although stroke is popularly believed to affect only elderly adults, stroke is among the top ten causes of death among infants and children. However the causes of stroke in children are very different from those in adults. Heart disease, sickle cell disease, cancer, meningitis, chicken pox, genetic factors, and congenital abnormalities account for most of the cases. Almost three quarters (71 percent) of cases were of the type known as hemorrhagic stroke. However, boys were more likely than girls to have a fatal stroke at all time points and at all ages. Also, boys were almost 50 percent more likely to die of stroke during infancy than girls.
Female hormone estrogen may partly explain these differences. Estrogen protects against heart disease and stroke. It surges in early infancy and then again at puberty in girls. They suggest that on the other hand, there may be genetic factors which make boys more susceptible to brain injury and damage.

Benefits of Yoga in RECOVERY or stroke patient : At the physical level, yoga and its cleansing practices have proven to be extremely effective for:

Increasing Flexibility – yoga has positions that act upon the various joints and muscles of the body to increase flexibility.

Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons – likewise, the well-researched yoga positions exercise the different tendons and ligaments of the body.

Surprisingly it has been found that the body which may have been quite rigid starts experiencing a remarkable flexibility in even those parts which have not been consciously work upon. It is here that the remarkable research behind yoga positions proves its mettle. Seemingly unrelated “non strenuous” yoga positions act upon certain parts of the body in an interrelated manner. When done together, they work in harmony to create a situation where flexibility is attained relatively easily.

Massaging of ALL Organs of the Body – Yoga is perhaps the only form of activity which massages all the internal glands and organs of the body in a thorough manner, including those – such as the prostate - that hardly get externally stimulated during our entire lifetime. Yoga acts in a wholesome manner on the various body parts. This stimulation and massage of the organs in turn benefits us by keeping away disease and providing a forewarning at the first possible instance of a likely onset of disease or disorder.
Complete Detoxification – By gently stretching muscles and joints as well as massaging the various organs, yoga ensures the optimum blood supply to various parts of the body. This helps in the flushing out of toxins from every nook and corner as well as providing nourishment up to the last point. This leads to benefits such as delayed aging, energy and a remarkable zest for life.

My expirence with stroke.

Recovery after Stroke :
Within 24 hours, IF POSSIBLE patient should be asked to try to get up and with assistance. It will be a very difficult task but the aim is to train the brain
as soon as possible. This should be done when patient is in I.C.U. itself.
In physiotherapy department, patient is given PASSIVE exercises, since he/she cannot move the limb on their own. All those movements which normal hand can do like flexion , extension , rotation is done passively. These exercises are carried daily for almost 6 months till one could do them with some resistance.
Step of Treatment
1. Give heat to effected part to increase blood flow.
2. No massages should be done.
3. Passive exercises are done in fingers of the effected side. Flexion and extension twice a day.
4. Deep Breathing should be done daily for 5 minutes.
5. Speech therapy daily. Try to read out loudly, a paragraph. It will be embrassing and very difficult to pronounce the word because of paralysis of the tongue of the effected side. But do NOT give up and read LOUDLY for at least one hour daily. We have to teach the forgotten words to our brain.
6. New pathways of Neurons will develop by constant learning.
7. Do not feel embarrassed ,you may not be able to say simple words like ‘watch’. Carry on your efforts, it will pay.
8. Try to walk with someone’s help daily, you must though you want to sham it.
9. In three months time you will be able to do your daily activities like brushing ,bathing , changing cloths and eating food yourself—which is a big thing for stroke patient.
10. Gradually start ACTIVE exercises like lifting weight, doing pulley exercises and cycling which a good exercise.
11. Physiotherapist teach some exercises depending on your improvements.
12. You MUST write with effected hand, though it is very difficult and may be disheartening, as you cannot hold the pen and read what you have written. Try to write at least two or three pages using different fingers with the thumb.
13. Develop some hobbies like gardening, reading books.
14. You must pray and read good books. They keep morale up and help in faster recovery.
15. Though recovery is very slow but COMPLETE recovery is possible.
16. Once with exercises big muscles develop, the finger muscles will gain strength by doing different jobs like cutting vegetables, sewing buttons .
17. Gradually your speech, motor and sensory movements come back.
18. Your near and dear ones play a big role in your recovery.
19. You thank GOD without whose guidance and help it was not possible.
20. The emphasis of early and timely treatment is very important.

Migraines and Heart Problems: What's the Link?

Migraines and Heart Problems: What's the Link?: "The study, published in the journal Neurology, looked at nearly 28,000 female health professionals ages 45 and older, including 3,568 who had migraines."
the study found that women with once-a-week migraines accompanied by auras were four times as likely to have had a stroke during the 12-year study than migraine-free women. And study participants who had migraines with auras less than once a month were more than twice as likely than migraine-free women to have a heart attack. They were also nearly twice as likely to have had a heart procedure, such as bypass surgery.

My Story

In 1997 I suffered a heamrragic Stroke my age was 49 not very old. I have no problem healthwise ,suddenly I started feeling  dizzy  and  quite unstable. With great difficulty I could reach my bed  and  lay  semiconsciuos on the bed. I could feel my Right side becoming cold . My family members got very worried and I was shitfed to a Hospital.
After doing all the invesgations, doctors  decided that I needed operation to remove the Heamtoma to lesson the disablity and to save my life.
I was  being  giving  very very hard excerise schedule twice a day which was pretty hard. I have lost my speech, got paralysis of Right side.
Now if you see me now it hard to think what I have been through .I am 90% improved,I can do every thing which a normal person will do.
My message to all those who are suffering with Stroke that Never give up,keep execersing regurally ,read books, have faith in God you will improve. When I got my stroke doctors told after one year ,you have reached the platue means I cannot improve further but I am still improving.
For those who are in the risk agewise, having high blood pressure, increased chlolestrol, labile blood pressure
should be very careful .

Treatment of Stroke

For the best, most effective treatment of stroke, a person with a suspected stroke must be given immediate medical attention. It is during the critical first 3 to 6 hours following stroke that today's growing stroke therapy options have the highest curative potential. Doctors can now administer an injection of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) to dissolve the clots that block blood flow to the brain. If the blockage can be removed with administration of TPA and sufficient blood flow is recovered within a three hour period following the stroke, the severity of permanent brain damage (nApproximately one-fourth of all strokes occur in people between the ages of 45 and 65. For most Like physical therapists, occupational therapists are concerned with improving motor and sensory abilities. eurological disability) is minimized or eliminated
• Permanent loss of cognitive or other brain functions (dementia)

• Permanent loss of movement or sensation of one or more parts of the body

Stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. Call your local emergency number (such as 911) if someone has symptoms of a stroke. .

Just 15 mins of sunbathing a day can cut heart disease, stroke risk

November 16th, 2009 LONDON - Just 15 minutes of sunbathing a day can boost vitamin D levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke in older adults, say researchers. The study involving people more than 50 years of age who had low levels of the sunshine vitamin had double the risk of heart failure and were 78 per cent more likely to have a stroke.

Opertive Treament.

Sometimes, surgery is needed to save the patient's life or to improve the chances of recovery. The type of surgery depends upon the specific cause of brain bleeding. For example, a hemorrhage due to an aneurysm or AVM requires special treatment (See: Aneurysm or AVM)

For other types of bleeding, removal of the hematoma may occasionally be needed, especially when bleeding occurs in the back of the brain.

The goal of long-term treatment is to help the patient recover as much function as possible and prevent future strokes. The recovery time and need for long-term treatment differs from person to person. Depending on the symptoms, rehabilitation may include:

Treatment of Stroke with medicines.

• Carefully controlling blood pressure, which can be too high or too low .

• Drugs to control brain swelling .

• Medications to relief headaches (but should be used with caution because they may reduce alertness and give the wrong impression that the patient is getting worse) .

• Seizure medications such as phenytoin,
